2015 15th September memory of Okurayama
The symposium offered me many brilliant impressions in terms of understanding this country’s mentality, culture and traditions. It really does seem to me that the real Japan can be found in Okurayama, not in Tokyo.
People sometimes describe talented individuals as “children of nature.” It seems to me that when it comes to a sense of the world, every Japanese person is a unique child of nature.
I remember with great happiness the team of outstanding artists who took part in this process. Despite very complicated weather conditions, I felt the creative energy and dedication of all of my colleagues in terms of achieving what we had set out to do. The surrounding landscape (mountains and piles of rocks) was of decisive importance to me in selecting this project.
It is always essential to include an important sculptural object in the landscape so that its proportions and ideas are in harmony with the surrounding environment. Landscapes are fragile, and it is easy to injure them. Respect for landscapes, rocks and people who shape their surrounding environment is important. The presence of master Isamu Noguchi, too, turned the location into one that is of cultural and historical importance.
In future, this unique landscape can be supplemented with new sculptural accents, thus making it more interesting not just for local residents in Okurayama, but also for tourists from afar. I thank from the bottom of my heart the organisers of the symposium and my fellow artists for this chance to spend such intensively creative and beautiful time in Japan!

世界の視点から見るとすべての日本の人々は比類のない自然の申し子と見受けられる。
今回のグループワークでも、受け持ったそれぞれの部所に愛情と高揚を持ち、最悪な天候の困難にもかかわらず創造的であり、限られた時間の中で完成まで到達することの出来る仲間達であった。又その周辺の山々や岩盤に囲まれた環境はこのプロジェクトを推進した重要で決定的なものであった。
周辺の環境と作品の形態やアイディアとの協調は本質的に彫刻の重要性を示すものである。環境は壊れやすく傷付きやすいものである、その大切な環境に包まれている人々や自然を尊重する事を強く希望する。
著名なるイサム・ノグチも又環境を考え文化的で歴史的な重要な場に風景を変えることに成功している。
将来に於けるユニークなランドスケープは彫刻的なアクセントによって大きく変化補完されるであろう、それ故より良い作品の提供を考えるべきでありまさに一地方の大蔵山からの発信は遠来者によって広がりを生むだろう。
この度のシンポジュームのオルガナイザーと猛烈な創造的時間を共有した仲間達また美しい日本を過ごすことの機会を得ることが出来たことは深く私の心の底に残ることである。
